Brussels launches permanent citizens' assembly on climate

The Brussels-Capital Region has announced that it will launch a permanent Citizens’ Assembly on Climate in 2023. Each year, the assembly will bring together 100 citizens to select topics, deliberate and come to recommendations. The citizens will also have a role in following up what the Brussels government does with the recommendations. The government for its part has committed to examine all citizens' recommendations thoroughly and to report transparently on its actions after three months and one year.

Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, candidate chairman of the IPCC and professor of Environmental Sciences at UCLouvain stated, "With this permanent Citizens' Assembly, Brussels sets an example for governments all over the world.”

The design of this innovative permanent climate assembly was led by the Belgian organisation G1000 with participation by Bjorn Bedsted and Graham Smith from the KNOCA management group. For further information, see the G1000 press release:
