Developments in Sub-National Climate Assemblies: Lessons from Local to Regional Levels

KNOCA Briefing No. 11: Developments in Sub-National Climate Assemblies: Lessons from Local to Regional Levels
November 2024

When KNOCA was established, its focus was on climate assemblies commissioned at the national level. This strategic choice was in recognition of the relatively unusual development of sustained public engagement on climate at this level of governance and its potential impact on national policy.

From the start, we recognised that the large number of climate assemblies taking place at local and regional levels, were a fertile ground for innovation in practice and we have increasingly turned our attention towards drawing on this wider experience in network activities and publications.

This Briefing is a first attempt to systemise our understanding of developments amongst sub-national assemblies. For this reason, it is long by KNOCA Briefing standards and is likely to be of primary interest to assembly practitioners and organisers. We have made an effort to present it in a way that makes it as accessible as possible. Our thanks to Ines Omann for coordinating this challenging project.

We expect local and regional practice to continue innovating. Please do contact KNOCA with any developments that could be included in future iterations of this Briefing.
